Loss is one of the most difficult experiences anyone will ever have to go through. Animals are no exception. In an [article][1] titled “Grief in animals: It’s arrogant to think we’re the only animals who mourn,” Marc Bekoff, Ph.D. in Animal Emotions, writes about the real ways in which animals respond to loss. Some animals respond to loss by wailing and howling, while others sulk in depression. Many animals lose their loved ones through the natural cycle of life, the realities of the food chain. For example, sea lions lose their babies to killer whales. Bekoff also cites anthropologist Jane Goodall’s observation of Flint, a chimpanzee who stopped eating after his mother died. He died, too, soon after. In addition, some animals such as foxes are known to hold funeral rituals. Humans aren’t the only ones with respect for the dead. Though we do not understand animals and their emotions in full, there is enough evidence to show that we relate to them more than we think.
