On November 1, 2014, Shelby Swink was to be walked down the aisle by her dad, to marry who she assumed was the love of her life. On the week leading up to the big date, the groom called to let her know he was not in love with her. Thus, the wedding was cancelled. Unlike standard break-ups, this one had Swink calling friends and family to cancel their coming as well as dealing with catering and additional businesses booked for the date. Despite having the support from her family and friends, the 23-year-old had no idea what she would do on her actual wedding date. “A pity party was the farthest thing from what I wanted or needed.” Her wedding photographer, [Elizabeth Hoard][1] suggested keeping the date to ‘trash the dress’ celebration, with Hoard capturing the moment. Swink loved the idea. She wanted her parents and bridesmaids involved in the ceremony. Her loved ones were happy to join in. Swink’s dad even brought cigars, and champagnes for the occasion. Swink describes the experience “liberating and cathartic.” Her story has resonated. A local bridal store has Swink’s dress on display until early January.
