Historically, the purpose of shoes have been to protect and provide comfort for those wearing them. Nonetheless, footwear has evolved from a necessity to an accessory and form of expression. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City holds an impressive collection of more than 5,000 shoes from all over the world. The permanent display offers a variety of designs, craftsmanship, and materials dating back to the fourteenth century to present day. Regardless of the time period, it appears people were willing to go through all sorts of uncomfortable situations in order to look good. Not much has changed.
