In December 1988, Gunther and his wife Christine Holtorf left Germany to tour Africa in their Mercedes G wagon nicknamed Otto. They planned to be gone for a couple of years, but instead they ended up traveling for over 20 years racking up almost 550,000 miles across 177 countries! Gunther and Christine encountered extraordinary wildlife, experienced different cultures, got into some tricky political situations, a few minor car wrecks, and 5 cases of malaria. They never slept in hotels instead they rested in hammocks or inside Otto. The couple didn’t have modern luxuries like cell phones or iPads, but Gunther used his two Leica cameras to document their epic journey. Scroll to the bottom to see the video.
