It’s not every day that a perfectly normal lake just up and disappears, which is why the case of the Lost Lake, located 130 miles southeast of Portland, Oregon, is such an unusual one. Every fall and winter, this 85-acre lake dries up and vanishes, and there’s nothing that anyone can do about it.

So, what causes this strange situation? Well, the main reason are lava tubes. According to experts, there are two hallow lava tubes at the bottom of the lake which are constantly draining the lake like a bathtub. In colder months, the amount of rainfall exceeds the amount of drainage, but in the summer, the whole thing just dries up.
