The first cassette tape, called “Compact Cassette,” was released by Dutch technology company Philips in 1963. The first tapes were originally designed for dictation, or recording, and were later used to change the way people listen to music. Though I was born in the late eighties, I can remember recording my own mix tapes and purchasing them from a local Wherehouse Music store to support my favorite artists. My first was Hanson’s *Middle of Nowhere* followed by *Spice* by Spice Girls, but it wasn’t long before the family transitioned onto the compact disc (CD). The kids of today can easily download songs off of iTunes at the click of a button, and except for rare cases, will never really know the lengths we went to — winding the ribbon back, for example — just to listen to our favorite songs. Take a look at the video below of today’s youth trying to figure out how to play a cassette.
