Watching This Blind Guy ‘See’ Art For The First Time Moved Me To Tears.

One of the most common signs we run into at a museum starts with “Please don’t touch.” Andrew Meyers is a full time artist based in Laguna Beach, California, hoping to change the way we experience art. About five or six years ago, Meyers showcased his screw paintings at an art show. He remembered a particular moment involving a blind man. “Someone was walking him around and describing the art to him,” Meyers described in an interview. “And I thought, ‘Well that’s not fair.'” Then the man came up to his paintings, moved his hands over the screws, and smiled. “For me, it was just an amazing moment. It was a blind man that could almost see for a second.” Meyers felt a desire to recreate that moment. That’s when he found out about George Wurtzel, a blind artisan and teacher at Napa Valley’s Enchanted Hills Camp. Wurtzel is currently converting a barn into a Tactile Art Center, and Meyers thought this would be the perfect opportunity to craft a screw painting for his new acquaintance.
