The photographer behind this compelling photos not only has an incredible talent, but an amazing history. Xyza Cruz Bacani grew up in the Philippines, but moved to Hong Kong for work. It was there that she took these street photographs, capturing the rawness and reality of Hong Kong’s chaotic streets. Bacani wasn’t always a photographer. Growing up poor in the Philippines, she left her home country to find work in Hong Kong. After becoming a nanny to an affluent Hong Kong family, Bacani began taking street photographs with a borrowed camera. She spent the next 10 dedicating her free time to her craft. Finally, it paid off: In 2015, work won her the Magnum Foundation’s Human Rights Fellowship which will allow Bacani to continue her studies in New York City. Check out her incredible prize-winning work below!
